“A full frame-off, mega-build restoration of the iconic Jeep Scrambler CJ-8—built to do it all. Whether it’s daily driving, cruising at 80 mph, tackling Moab trails, or enjoying a top-down Sunday with family, this 4x4 pickup delivers.”
The CJ-8 Scrambler is the longer-wheelbase pickup version of the CJ-7, stretched by two feet with a 103” wheelbase. This added length provides a smoother ride along with rear seating and increased cargo capacity. This build began with an excellent donor vehicle that already featured several performance upgrades, and it was completely disassembled before undergoing a full body-off restoration.
The rust-free frame was stripped, sandblasted, epoxy primed using PPG DP90, and finished in Raptor Liner for long-term durability. Power comes from the original 4.2L inline-six, which was retained for its strong performance, high-revving nature, and excellent torque. The engine was rebuilt with a Comp Cams camshaft (#68-201-4), ARP head bolts, and a new cylinder head, along with a Mopar Performance MPI fuel injection system. Inspection of the engine revealed excellent condition, including strong oil pressure and just 3.2% variance in compression across all six cylinders. Compression readings were 155, 156, 160, 160, 159, and 155 psi respectively. The engine was repainted and resealed, and further upgraded with a CARB-approved long tube header, a custom stainless-steel exhaust system with a Magnaflow muffler, and a new emissions-compliant catalytic converter. The cooling system was also upgraded with new hoses, thermostat, and a high-capacity aluminum radiator.
The drivetrain features a Dana front axle with 4.56 gears and Warn locking hubs, while the rear has been upgraded to a Ford 9” axle with matching 4.56 gears and a spool-style locker. The factory wiring harness was completely removed and replaced with a new Painless Performance wiring harness. The original 4-speed manual transmission, considered a weak point due to its limitations in speed, comfort, and off-road performance, was replaced with a 700R4 automatic transmission. This setup includes new Novak adapters, a new torque converter, a B&M floor shifter, a refurbished Dana 300 transfer case with twin stick shifters, and custom-length Tom Woods driveshafts, resulting in significantly improved highway drivability and off-road capability.
Suspension upgrades include refinished 3” lift leaf springs, new polyurethane bushings, and new Skyjacker shocks. Steering was improved with a new New Advantage steering box and new OEM replacement tie rod ends. Braking was upgraded with a rear disc brake conversion and new rear pads, along with new front calipers, rotors, and pads on the factory front disc setup. The vehicle rides on refinished 15x10 steel wheels coated in black PPG paint and wrapped in 35x12.50R15 BFGoodrich Mud Terrain tires.
The exterior was extensively restored, starting with a new steel tub from Rugged Ridge. The original front clip was sandblasted to bare metal and found to be rust-free, requiring no sheet metal work. New Warrior half doors were installed, and the entire body was coated in PPG epoxy primer before receiving a show-quality finish in PPG Enviro-base Porsche Python Green paint. The inner tub and underside were coated in Raptor Liner for durability and easy maintenance. A 3” polyurethane body lift was added, along with Rusty’s Off-Road front and rear bumpers. A Stegodon 9,500 lb winch with a paint-matched synthetic cable is mounted up front, complemented by Sylvania LED lighting in the front and MetalCloak LED lighting in the rear.
Inside, the cabin was completely reimagined by Innovative Custom Interiors, featuring full-grain leather upholstery on the front seats, rear tumble seats, steering wheel, door cards, and shifter boots, all finished with precision green stitching. A removable custom carpet kit was installed along with a new black dash pad and a Tuffy locking glovebox. The dashboard features Dakota Digital analog-style gauges, a Retro Manufacturing stereo, Rockford Fosgate front and rear speakers, and a Cerwin-Vega subwoofer mounted under the rear seat. Comfort is enhanced with a Jeep-Air HVAC system neatly installed under the dash. A Bestop soft top is included, which can be quickly removed or converted into a bikini top, along with new three-point seatbelts in the front and lap belts in the rear.
This build represents a true “every nut and bolt” resto-mod CJ-8, with virtually every component either refurbished or replaced. It stands as an exceptionally high-level build—possibly one of the most complete examples available—while remaining true to the original Scrambler concept.
Included with the vehicle are a hard top, full fabric doors, stripped metal full doors, fabric half doors, and a rear seat, all in original condition.
