1984 AMC Scrambler

The Jeep Scrambler CJ-8 is one of the most sought-after classic Jeeps ever produced. As the longer-wheelbase pickup version of the legendary CJ-7, the CJ-8 offers nearly two additional feet of body length and a 103-inch wheelbase, resulting in a noticeably smoother ride while providing comfortable rear seating and generous cargo capacity. This Scrambler underwent a complete body-off, frame-off restoration and was built with the goal of creating a reliable, highly capable modern classic while preserving the character that makes the CJ-8 so special. Starting with an exceptionally solid donor vehicle, every major system was refurbished, upgraded, or replaced to produce an outstanding example that is equally at home on the highway, on the trail, or at a local car show.

The rust-free frame was stripped, sandblasted, epoxy primed with PPG DP90, and finished with durable Raptor Liner for long-lasting protection. Every stage of the restoration focused on quality, longevity, and attention to detail.

Rather than replacing the legendary 4.2L inline-six, the decision was made to retain and enhance it. The rebuilt engine received a Comp Cams camshaft, ARP head bolts, a new cylinder head, and the highly desirable Mopar Performance Multi-Port Fuel Injection system. Inspection during assembly revealed an exceptionally clean, well-maintained engine with excellent oil pressure and outstanding compression, showing only a 3.2% variance across all six cylinders. The engine was completely resealed, refinished, and upgraded with a C.A.R.B.-approved long-tube header, stainless-steel exhaust system, MagnaFlow muffler, emission-compliant catalytic converter, and an aluminum high-capacity radiator with all new cooling components.

Power is delivered through a professionally upgraded drivetrain featuring a 700R4 automatic transmission paired with Novak adapters, a new torque converter, B&M floor shifter, refurbished Dana 300 transfer case with twin-stick shifters, and custom-length Tom Woods driveshafts. This combination dramatically improves highway cruising while maintaining exceptional off-road capability.

The drivetrain is complemented by 4.56 gearing, a Dana front axle with Warn locking hubs, and an upgraded Ford 9-inch rear axle equipped with a spool-style locker. An entirely new Painless Performance wiring harness ensures modern electrical reliability throughout the vehicle.

Suspension upgrades include refinished 3-inch lift leaf springs, new polyurethane bushings, and Skyjacker shocks, providing improved ride quality and trail performance. Steering was upgraded with a new steering box and new OEM-style tie rod ends for confident, responsive handling.

Braking performance was modernized with a rear disc brake conversion while the factory front disc brakes received new calipers, rotors, and pads. The restored 15x10 steel wheels are wrapped in aggressive 35x12.50R15 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tires, giving the Scrambler both exceptional capability and an unmistakable stance.

The exterior is equally impressive. A brand-new Rugged Ridge steel body tub was installed while the original front clip was refinished after proving completely rust-free. The body was finished in stunning show-quality PPG Envirobase Porsche Python Green paint over epoxy primer, while the underside and interior tub were coated in Raptor Liner for maximum durability. A 3-inch polyurethane body lift complements the build, while Rusty's Off-Road front and rear bumpers, a 9,500-pound winch with synthetic rope, LED lighting, and new Warrior Products half doors complete the rugged yet refined appearance.

Inside, the cabin combines classic Jeep simplicity with modern comfort. Full-grain leather upholstery with body-color green stitching covers the front seats, rear tumble seats, steering wheel, shifter boots, and door panels. A removable custom carpet kit, new dash pad, and locking Tuffy glovebox add both comfort and practicality.

Modern conveniences include Dakota Digital analog-style gauges, a Retro Manufacturing stereo, Rockford Fosgate speakers, a Cerwin-Vega subwoofer, and a Jeep-Air HVAC system discreetly integrated beneath the dash. A new Bestop soft top offers multiple open-air configurations, while new three-point front seat belts and rear lap belts provide added safety.

The result is an exceptionally well-executed, every-nut-and-bolt restored Jeep Scrambler that successfully blends timeless CJ-8 styling with carefully selected modern upgrades.
